Status of this statement
As a registered political party, the Australian Democrats are exempt from the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) in relation to our political acts and practices. This statement is provided for transparency only. It is not a contract and does not create legally binding obligations or rights.
Who we are
The Australian Democrats are a registered political party. We collect and use personal information in the ordinary course of our political and campaigning activities.
The exemption
Registered political parties, and the political acts and practices of their representatives and volunteers, are exempt from the Privacy Act. The Australian Privacy Principles do not impose obligations on the Party in relation to those activities, and this statement does not adopt them as binding commitments.
Our general approach
We aim to handle personal information respectfully, to use it for genuine political and Party purposes, to keep it reasonably secure, to limit access to those who need it, and to retain it only while useful. We do not sell personal information.
Information we may collect
Names, contact details, membership and supporter details, donation and volunteering information, correspondence, and information you provide when you interact with us.
How we may use it
To communicate with members and supporters, to campaign and advocate, to organise events and volunteering, to seek support and donations, to conduct research, and to run the Party. We may share information with our divisions, committees, candidates, contractors and like-minded organisations for these purposes.
Your choices
You can ask to update your details or to stop receiving our communications at any time, and we will use reasonable efforts to action your request. While we are not legally required to provide access or correction, we will consider reasonable requests in good faith.
